Dissolution, by C.J. Sansom. The first of the Matthew Shardlake series of historical mysteries, set in Tudor England. (This one is set in 1537, as the monasteries are starting to be dissolved.) These are the finest historical mysteries I've ever read, and some of the best historical fiction.
